SOE students sharpen networking skills
Some VCU School of Education students got to sharpen their networking skills at a recent school-sponsored event at Cabell Library.
“Five Simple Steps to Stress-Free Networking” was facilitated by Haley Sims, senior associate director of career advising and discovery with VCU Career Services. Sims explained to students the importance of effective networking for job seekers, then shared a five-step process for creating a succinct and persuasive 30-second elevator pitch that would impress prospective employers.
Near the end of the session, students paired up and practiced their pitches, with the opportunity for instant feedback from an employer’s perspective.
The event was sponsored by the SOE Student Leadership Council, which:
- Assists with coordination of student engagement and development opportunities;
- Facilitates communication between the administration and the student body;
- Represents the student voice in school policy development and planning; and
- Furthers school engagement with the community
The SOE Office of Development, Alumni and Student Engagement is exploring a wide variety of events to help alumni and students interact and remain connected throughout the year, including networking dinners and career development.
