Arnold P. Fleshood Scholarship Fund

Arnold P. Fleshood was the first dean of the School of Education. He served as dean from 1969-1973 and joined the school in 1965, when it was the elementary education department of Richmond Professional Institute. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond, a master’s degree from Virginia Tech and a doctoral degree in educational administration from Columbia University.

Fleshood always wanted to be an educator, and as an educator, he valued the importance of language arts. He played an instrumental role in developing the VCU Reading Center to serve students in the Richmond area who needed help improving their reading skills. He was also very passionate about supporting students with disabilities and those who lived in disadvantaged areas. He felt that even though a student may have a disability or live in an underserved location, they should still have the same opportunities for a quality education.

The Arnold P. Fleshood Scholarship Fund is designed to offer financial assistance to a graduate student interested in reading education.

Criteria

• Must be enrolled in a reading/language arts education program (or a related field, with a demonstrated interest in reading/language arts)
• Must submit essay answering the following prompt: Define your unique underserved target population. Include skills, training, experience and interest in working with target population. (Note: this will replace the essay prompt in the application)
