Vivian Conway Mason Scholarship

Vivian Lee Conway Mason was born in Historic Jackson Ward. She was the eleventh of twelve children. She was educated in Richmond Public Schools and was a graduate of Maggie Walker High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Education (1976), specializing in Early Childhood Pre K-5. Her graduate courses were completed at Hampton University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Union University with emphasis on administration and special education. She gave 39 years of service to Richmond Public Schools.

In 1994, through “People to People International,” Vivian was invited to St. Petersburg, Russia, with a delegation from the United States to participate in setting up an Early Childhood Program.

She was a member of the Richmond Education Association, serving three times — as secretary, treasurer and on the Board of Directors. She has also served as a delegate to the Virginia Education Association and the National Education Association. Vivian served as Mid-Atlantic Regional chair of the National Education Association Early Childhood causes. She continued to participate in Lobby Day at the General Assembly, lobbying for legislation concerning education issues and also campaigning for local, state and national candidates.

Vivian believed that children are the “GEMS” of our society and our hope for the future. She was an advocate for children, parents and the community, believing that when these are united, they make for a powerful force that brings about change and success for all.

Criteria

• Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in the School of Education
• Must be in top half of class academically
• Must be planning on teaching in an urban or high needs school
